THE MOTHERLOAD

An imaginative telling of the story of a Vietnamese American mother-daughter duo who, in their attempt to heal the rift between them, reenact and satirize scenes from celebrated Vietnam War films while depicting a diasporic reality. Two inventive storylines complicate The MOTHERLOAD to levels of absurdity. Both of these glide in and out beneath the narrative backbone of Jessca and Kim’s personal story, and reflect the stunning disconnect between the Vietnamese diaspora and the world’s understanding of their presence.

Indochine

Set in colonial French Indochina during the 1930s to 1950s, this is the story of Éliane Devries, a French plantation owner, and of her adopted Vietnamese daughter, Camille, set against the backdrop of the rising Vietnamese nationalist movement.

When two teenage girls plot to steal liquor for themselves, their plan goes awry when they decide to visit their old piano teacher who's developed dementia.

Dark Blue World

Lt. Franta Slama is a top pilot in the Czech Air Force who is assigned to train a promising young flier, Karel Vojtisek, and they soon become friends. When Nazi Germany invades Czechoslovakia in 1939, they both reject the authority of their new leaders and escape to England where they join other Czech exiles in the RAF. While flying a mission over England, Karel crash lands and happens upon the farmhouse of Susan, a young woman whose husband is in the Navy. Karel soon falls head over heels for Susan but, while they enjoy a brief fling, in time Susan decides she prefers the company of the older and more worldly Franta. As Franta and Karel struggle to maintain their friendship despite their romantic rivalry.

In Bruges

Ray and Ken, two hit men, are in Bruges, Belgium, waiting for their next mission. While they are there they have time to think and discuss their previous assignment. When the mission is revealed to Ken, it is not what he expected.

A Sensitive Person

The tangible one, now cruel, now crazy, along which the nomadic actor "Dad Mour", his wife "Mum" and two sons try to return home, but also the imaginary one, even more, tortuous and dusty, on which the often impressive mental youth (or immaturity, a scrooge might say) is welded with life circumstances forcing the protagonist to wise up. An anxious and exuberant cinematic faerie about love, the fear of loneliness and the gaze of sons fixed on their fathers.

Thuy

A Vietnamese woman, Thuy, is married to a Korean man and lives with her in-laws in rural Korea. One day, her gambling-addict husband is killed in a motorcycle accident. The woman gets suspicious because her husband was not even able to ride a bicycle. She wants to investigate her husband's death, while the villagers find her annoying

Lonig & Havendel

To see snow and learn German, the young Vietnamese girl Trúc Lâm (Nano Nguyen) moves to a small town in the middle of the Erzgebirge mountains in Saxony. She is fascinated by the forest, the mountains and the clear air that smells of clouds and winter and burns her nose when she breathes it in - for which she is mocked by her classmates. On a trip to a mine, she gets lost in the labyrinth of dark shafts and suddenly emerges on the other side of the mountain. This world is almost identical to the old one - but the characters have been replaced. In the town on the other side, she meets Duc (Tri An Bui), the son of a Vietnamese family who run an Asian snack bar. And while Duc tries to find a balance between his German-Vietnamese heritage and the expectations of others, Trúc Lâm accepts the help of a ghost to find her way back into her world.

Documentary: Moving

Amateur documentary film about the process of moving. A boy, Jakub, decides to make a documentary himself after a tour of one of the apartments. The documentary shows the whole story of how he, his parents and younger brother move to a bigger apartment. The result is an emotional rollercoaster that deals not only with the move, but also with the family itself.

My Story

Young talented Elizabeth leaves a successful career in ballet for love. The man who has stolen her heart, however, has a dark side, and in a single moment Elizabeth loses everything dear to her in life.

Rooftop Lempicka

While her mother is expecting their second child, young Thi befriends club waitress Ngoc who has just moved into their family′s house as a tenant. As their friendship grows, she finds out that Ngoc is an undisclosed sex worker. Meanwhile, the story is silently observed by an art book featuring female nudes by painter Tamara de Lempicka, stolen from a bookstore.

Camellia

The Vietnamese German Huong, equipped with her small video camera, documents her life before moving out, exploring her relationships with friends, family, places and objects that she leaves behind. A poetic snapshot of her person, addressed to her father.
